If students aren’t able to make it home for the Thanksgiving holiday, they still have a place to celebrate. Every year, Off-Campus Student Services partners with the Sun Devil Family Association to offer a free Thanksgiving meal with all the trimmings to students who are either unable to travel home or do not have a place to go. Great food, fun and friendship are provided — and students even get to take home leftovers.
Among the more than 250 who enjoyed the event in 2012 were students from across the U.S. as well as international students from countries including India, Nepal, China, Colombia, England, Australia, Spain and Pakistan. From a large poster thank-you note from the students, we share a small sample of their gratitude:
- “Thank you so much for the dinner and for being there for students who don’t have a place to enjoy a Thanksgiving meal.” — Nicole from Ohio
- “Wonderful moments — thank you for letting me experience the delicious food. Wishing you all the happiest time of the year!” — Maria from Indonesia
- “Thank you for the wonderful food and meeting new people — it was fun! More, please!” — Zebo from Tajikistan
Volunteers provided an inviting environment and showed support for all the students and others who dropped by for a wonderful meal. Parents are always appreciative that all students, regardless of their circumstances, have a welcoming place to celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday.
Though attendees are far from their homes and families, they are able to enjoy the warmth of the holiday — in large part due to the generous support of many ASU parents through the SDFA.
