Learn more about PLUMS

For many parents, especially those who have been very involved in their student's ASU experience, graduation brings just a hint of sadness as their Sun Devil Family Association (SDFA) tenure comes to an end. In 2009, SDFA board members and parent volunteers realized it doesn't have to end. They created the Parents of Alums (PLUMS) membership to allow devoted ASU parents to stay involved with the university they love, even after their students graduate. PLUMS provide the benefit of their experience to new ASU parents and continue to give their time, talent and treasure helping those who came after them. Once a Sun Devil, always a Sun Devil.

"The vision of the university, I believe, is a model to make our students competitive and our state and country competitive," said Dave Ryan, 2005 - 06 SDFA board president and proud PLUM of Matthew '04 and Julianna '09. "ASU is the place my kids became adults. It grounded them for future success. I still want to do what I can to help ASU succeed and to ensure that other kids have the same opportunities mine had."

Jodi Christensen has served on the SDFA's board of advisors for the past four years. Her son Mac graduated in May 2011 from the W.P. Carey School. "Being a part of the SDFA has been an extremely rewarding experience," said Jodi. "I am thrilled to continue to support them and in turn the students, parents, faculty and staff at ASU as a PLUM. This organization has such a positive impact on the ASU community. I encourage all current and 'alum' parents to stay involved!"

"As far as I know, this is the first group of its kind in the country," says Ken Zawarus, SDFA past board member. "This is a great way for us to preserve our historical knowledge by keeping parents in the fold longer than the usual four years. It's also an opportunity for us to show parents that we're here for them at the beginning, during and even after their student's time at ASU."

Always willing to help with SDFA activities while her daughter was a student at ASU, Peggy continued to stay involved even after daughter Erin graduated. Peggy volunteered to help with orientation activities in the Seattle area, greeting new parents and answering questions as a 'seasoned parent'. This past November, Peggy thought it would be a lot of fun to organize a University of Washington/ASU tailgate. With the help of current SDFA board member and Seattle mom Janna Harala, (Elle, class of '12), they invited local parents to 'tailgate' at a local restaurant and make ASU connections before the game.
