Jeanne Hanrahan, a three-year member of the ASUPA Scholarship Selection committee, answers the question, “Why do you volunteer with the Parent’s Association?”
I volunteer with the Parents Association because I have always been an active parent in my child’s educational life. When my student began attending ASU, I wanted a way to contribute as a parent.
I volunteer on the scholarship committee because it is incredibly meaningful for me. It is rewarding to make a difference in the lives of individual students who have unique circumstances.
Volunteering on this committee is the most favorite thing I do. In addition to reviewing their applications, we interview a number of scholarship candidates. So I get to meet them and hear about their lives and what a difference a scholarship would make in their success. It is very compelling to hear their stories.
Students who rise to the top are often talented and successful and contribute to their community and/or the university while dealing with incredible challenges. We get the opportunity to help them begin, or continue, their education and be successful.
Since our scholarship program is designed so students continue to be involved with the Parents Association, I also get to know them personally and be involved with them throughout the year. This one-to-one experience is wonderful and unique.
