For many parents, especially those who have been very involved in their student’s ASU experience, graduation brings just a hint of sadness as their ASUPA tenure comes to an end. A few months ago, however, ASUPA board members realized it doesn’t have to end. They created the Parents of Alums (PLUMS) membership to allow devoted ASU parents to stay involved with the university they love, even after their students graduate.
“As far as I know, this is the first group of its kind in the country,” says Ken Zawarus, ASUPA board member and one of 10 active PLUMS. “This is a great way for us to preserve our historical knowledge by keeping parents in the fold longer than the usual four years. It’s also an opportunity for us to show parents that we’re here for them at the beginning, during and even after their student’s time at ASU.”
To welcome the inaugural PLUMS, the Class of 2009, the board presented each PLUM with a “diploma” and an official PLUMS baseball cap at the April meeting. Board members are working on a charter that outlines opportunities and guidelines for PLUMS.
“I’m happy to be a PLUM. It means I don’t have to give up what I’ve discovered over the past four years as an ASUPA member,” says Steve Murow, whose son graduated in May. “I’ve met great parents from across the country who share my values and concerns — we all want the best for our kids. It’s also allowed me to have a direct role in helping deserving students attend ASU through our ASUPA scholarships. Hearing these students express their gratitude each year makes me want to do more and stay involved.”
All parents of ASU alumni are encouraged to become active PLUMS. To learn more about how you can become involved, proud PLUMS are encouraged to contact Robin Okun Hengl at 480-965-0830.
