Taking positive action in challenging times

As the proud parent of R.J. ’09 and Caroline ’10, I am frequently in a good position to see the difference even small gestures of support and kindness can make, not only for my children but for many other ASU students. I don’t think I need to tell you how hard the current economic situation makes things for the university as it tries to provide the best education to as many students as possible.

That’s a big reason I am very enthusiastic to be starting my term as president of the ASU Parents Association (ASUPA) board. The Parents Association really makes a difference and I’m anxious to take on the challenge. For 25 years, this group has provided financial and volunteer support for initiatives like academic tutoring and mentoring, helping ASU freshmen make the leap from high school to college life, rewarding exceptional academic advising, hosting the wonderful Professor of the Year recognition event, and sponsoring a Thanksgiving dinner for students unable to travel home.

Above all, we provide numerous scholarships and emergency financial aid for students facing a financial crisis. That’s especially important now, when Arizona’s universities have had to raise tuition in order to help them cope with massive budget cuts. In fact, the ASUPA board has committed to raise funds to increase by 25 the number of scholarships we fund. It’s one positive step we can take to help ASU provide access to a high-quality education, regardless of a student’s ability to pay. I feel privileged to be a part of helping so many ASU students.

Being part of the Parents Association isn’t all work and no play. We host regional get-togethers and really enjoy ASU Homecoming, Fall Welcome and Family Weekend. On Nov. 3, we will recognize the association’s 25th anniversary with an exciting fundraising celebration to help raise the funding for those additional scholarships we’ve pledged. See the back page for more details or visit asu.edu/Parents/SilverIntoGold.

I look forward to seeing you at one or more of our great social events!
Sincerely,
Ceda Austerman
President, ASU Parents Association
